Geocache Description:

The coordinates above take you to a safe place to pull off the highway and park. Don’t drive in to far off the pavement if it has been raining, or you may get stuck. NOTE: The cache is located a very short walk across the desert to N42 degrees, 49.7930 minutes and W118 degrees, 55.8700 minutes.

Peter French, the colorful manager of the historic French-Glen Livestock Company, was shot dead by an enemy in the 1800s. French’s Lookout over-looks the historic town of French Glen. The town is located an hour south of Burns on a good paved two-lane road that winds through the Malhuer National Wildlife Refuge.

French Glen is the gateway to Steens Mountain, a huge slab of land uplifted at the east side over a mile above the "Great Basin". Be sure to four-wheel-drive to the 9,670 foot summit across the sloping lands of grass that attracted conflicting sheep and cattle barons, including Peter French. The summit drops a vertical mile to glaciated valleys dotted with lakes and spring fed creeks. (See my personal Webpage for photos of a Steens summit wedding.) Hunting, fishing, photography, birding and hiking are superb.

French Glen accommodations include the historic eight-room Hotel (reserved months in advance), the BLM’s cool Page Springs Campground, and a rustic RV park.

The Cache contents include the requisite notebook, pencil and Geocaching Notice, a dollar bill, no trail fees stickers (2), a 2002 calendar from QuickData, anti Fee Demo bumper stickers (2), a cork from elk cove vineyards, a golden toad from Bend, a key cover, an EMS/SAR backcountry accident report form, Pollyanna’s puzzle, and two AA batteries for a GPS.

Have a good time!
