This area is known as the Three Rivers Estuary, as the Taf, the Tywi, and the Gwendraeth all come to the sea here. In mediaeval times these rivers were navigable and this was a busy port, although the rivers have now silted up. At Black Scar Point, pilgrims would either take a ferry or wade across the river Taf on their way to St David’s in the west. On the opposite bank is the town of Laugharne, the site of a castle as well as Dylan Thomas’ boathouse. You can see the Bell Tower, which in times gone by would have been rung to hail the river ferry.
