Geocache Description:

Mary Ann Davies was born in 1872 at the hamlet of Penrhiwnewydd, the oldest child of William Davies and Mary (Jones). William was a lead miner who came from outside the parish but Mary’s family were from Llwynprusg, just down the hill. Mary Ann had four other siblings; Azariah, Jacob, David John and Catherine Jane Davies. When Mary Ann was 16 her mother died and was buried in the nearby chapel graveyard at Salem. With little work in the nearby lead mines, William then moved his young family to the coal-mining community of Tonypandy in the Rhondda valleys, South Wales. Cousins of his late wife had already moved to Tonypandy for work and so the Davies family followed them. The family later moved a few miles further up to Treorchy where they then settled. William died soon after and was buried next to his wife at Salem. In 1901 the youngest brother,  David John Davies was killed in a rock fall at Parc colliery, Cwmparc, Treorchy. Soon afterwards, his elder brothers decided to emigrate to the mines of Durango County in Colorado where cousins of theirs from the Davies side of the family were already working. The brothers left in 1903 and never returned to Wales. The youngest child, Catherine Jane Davies returned to Penrhiwnewydd later moving to the adjacent village of Pen-bont Rhydybeddau.  She lived here until she died in 1960. Mary Ann Davies married and had five children and she remained in Treorchy for the rest of her life. Mary Ann Davies was my great grandmother.
