At the turn of the 20th century, this area of McGill Street was booming with the construction of a dozen buildings. Strategically located at the end of the Place D'Youville, this cache invites you to take a turn on yourself to admire three of them.

Édifice Grand Tronc / Grand Trunk building
Construit entre 1899 et 1902 par la compagnie ferroviaire du Grand Tronc et conçu par l'architecte Richard A. Waite, l’édifice se trouve près des installations de la compagnie dans le port, de ses ateliers à Pointe-Saint-Charles et de sa gare Bonaventure. L’édifice à toit plat, en forme de U légèrement ouvert du côté de la rue Saint-Paul, est recou-
vert principalement en grès chamois de l’Indiana. Il compte cinq étages incluant le rez-de-chaussée, deux étages sup-
plémentaires complétant les tours d’angle. Ne manquez de visiter l'intérieur accessible au public. L’entrée principale mène à un vestibule richement décoré, puis à un spectacu-
laire ensemble d’escaliers et de puits de lumière traversent les cinq étages.
Built between 1899 and 1902 by the Grand Trunk transport company and designed by the architect Richard A. Waite, the building is located near its port's facilities,its workshops in Pointe-Saint-Charles and its Bonaventure railway sta-
tion. The flat-roofed U-shaped building, slightly open on the Saint-Paul Street side, is mainly covered with Indiana's chamois sandstone. It has five floors including the ground floor, two additional floors completing the corner towers. Do not miss visiting the interior accessible to the public. The main entrance leads to a richly decorated vestibule and then to a spectacular set of stairs and skylights cross the five floors. |

Cet édifice, oeuvre de l’agence d’architectes Hutchison and Wood, est construit entre 1906 et 1908, aussi par la compagnie ferroviaire du Grand Tronc. Les trois premiers étages de l’édifice sont occupés par sa filiale Canadian Express, spécialisée dans les mandats bancaires et les chèques de voyage. L’édifice de 10 étages à toit plat pré-
sente les principales caractéristiques du gratte-ciel montréalais du début du XXe siècle. Un parement en grès chamois de l’Ohio couvre les trois façades sur rues, tandis que l’arrière est en brique.
Built by the architect Hutchison and Wood, the building was built between 1906 and 1908, also by the Grand Trunk railway company. The first three floors of the building are occupied by its subsidiary Canadian Express, which spe-
cializes in bank money orders and traveler's checks. The 10-storey, flat-roofed building features the main features of the early 20th century Montreal skyscraper. An Ohio cha-
mois sandstone covers the three facades on the streets, while the back is brick. |

Cet édifice est construit par le gouvernement du Canada en deux phases, la première s’étalant entre 1912 et 1916 et la seconde entre 1934 et 1936. Du granit gris du Qué-
bec et du grès chamois de Nouvelle-Écosse recouvrent une structure en acier dans la première section et une structure en béton armé dans la seconde section. À l'inté-
rieur, accessible au public, allez admirer la grande salle des guichets aux murs ponctués par de hauts pilastres ju-
melés en marbre crème avec de longues veines vertes et aux chapiteaux corinthiens dorés. La richesse des maté-
riaux nobles, tels le marbre gris de Missisquoi des plan-
chers, le marbre gris des comptoirs ainsi que les bronzes des tables, guichets, portes, participe également à la sobriété classique de l’ensemble.
The building was built by the Government of Canada in two phases, the first being between 1912 and 1916 and the se-
cond between 1934 and 1936. Gray granite from Quebec and the sandstone from Nova Scotia cover a steel struc-
ture in the first section and a reinforced concrete structure in the second section. Inside, accessible to the public, you can admire the great hall of the wickets with walls punctua-
ted by high twinned pilasters in cream marble with long green veins and golden Corinthian capitals. The richness of the noble materials such as the the gray Missisquoi marble of the floors, the gray marble of the counters and the bronzes of the tables, windows, doors, participates to the classical sobriety of the whole. |
