Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Holden House!

Tom Edward Holden, Jr., son of Tom Edward Holden and Amelia Jane Heelies, came to Bunnell from Palatka in 1915 to work for Mr. C. A. Smith in his Drug Store as a pharmacist. In September 1916, he purchased the business from Mr. Smith and renamed it Holden's Pharmacy.

On December 25, 1916, Tom married Ethel Lura Bortree and in February 1918, they began construction on this house. Ethel's father, Samuel Merwin Bortree, built the house. Samuel came to Bunnell in 1916 and built the Pine Grove Inn, which was located on the vacant lot to the west of the Holden House. His wife, the former Alta G. Ehrgood, managed the inn.

Tom and Ethel resided in this house until the 1970's. They raised their two daughters, Altajane and Eleanor Pearl, here. Both girls became pharmacists. Both graduated from the University of North Carolina (1940 and 1947, respectively). Both married pharmacists..
