Geocache Description:

This cache was a part of the Historic Benton County Coin Challenge. The coins have been distributed, but the chance to learn about our history is still available

The church was built in 1906 by the United Brethren. The congregation built not one, but two colleges in the small town of Philomath. In 1867, The United Brethren built Philomath College (now Benton County Museum) and in 1889 they built a second college named College of Philomath just a few blocks away. This happened when a faction split from the original congregation because they did not want their church members to belong to secret societies (e.g. Masons, Odd Fellows, Grange) but the other faction wanted to allow dual membership. The College of Philomath was built in 1889, burned in 1893, was rebuilt in 1894, burned again in 1905, and was built again in 1909. It still exists up on the hill behind Philomath College. Both colleges closed by 1929 but this church is still owned by the United Brethren.
