Park at Flora carpark which is 75 km from Nelson and 36 km from Motueka. The Motueka Valley Highway links Nelson and Motueka. Turn off this road at Ngatimoti and cross the Motueka River. Turn left onto Motueka River West Bank Road, then right into Graham Valley Road, which climbs steeply to the car park. The last 5.8 km is unsealed and turning a vehicle on the road can be difficult. In summer the road can become rough; in winter a 4WD is recommended as there can be ice and snow and after heavy rain the road is prone to slips
The cache is located about 10 minutes walk above Mt Arthur Hut. The track to the hut is an easy 1.5 hour walk, from there onwards its a poled route. Remember you are in an alpine environment and conditions can change quickly, be prepared. My last tramping trip here a few years ago we had perfect conditions as we started climbing out of horseshoe basin, by the time we got to Mt Arthur Hut we could only just see the track at our feet in the thick cloud.
This trip we had perfect conditions, Nanzie's second tramping trip in nearly 45 years, seeing the track and our target she decided to sit her and wait here while I cached my way to the summit of Winter Peak. For her patience of waiting for nearly 5 hours for my return I decided to place a cache here. I wasnt carrying a container with me but we found a pill bottle in our packs back at the hut so walked back up the next morning to find a hide.
In the short time it took to hide the cache and take a few photos 20 people must have walked past us so please be aware of muggles.
