Quantztown is an unincorporated community located in the city of Markham. It is named for German settler Melchior Quantz, who arrived in 1794 after serving with the British Army. Many of the Quantz family is buried here; you can see some of their gravestones as you explore the small cemetery.
You will also find the grave of Darius Witter, who was killed when the Desjardin's railroad bridge collapsed on March 12, 1857. On that date, 90 passengers were on a Great Western Railway train from Toronto to Hamilton. As the train neared its destination, the swing bridge over the Desjardins Canal collapsed. The train plummeted into the frigid canal, killing 59. He was 30. This disaster made international headlines.
