Geocache Description:

A shortish off-set multi.  You are looking for a nano-cache in a larger container hidden in a camo bag.  Bring your own pen.  It is usually possible to park in the narrow roads around the green – we parked by the pub, but please take care to park sensibly.

A Meeting House was first established in Frampton on Severn in 1760. The present building, sited in a concealed position on the north-west side of The Green, was built in 1776 by local builder Thomas Hewlett and opened by Revd. Rowland Hill in the same year. It was altered in 1849 when a Sunday school wing was added. The walls of the older part of the building are of brickwork above a plinth formed of blocks of copper slag. Copper slag blocks were a bi-product of copper production in Bristol, Redbrook (Forest of Dean) and Swansea and were easily transported by boat, to be used as a building material in the areas around the river Severn and Wye valley in the 18th century.

William Marshall described this use of copper slag in his Rural Economy of Glocestershire , 1796; “SLAG (copper dross) 5 or 6s a ton, on the Kays (sic). This, I understand, is the scoria thrown off by copper, in the process of smelting. Until of late years, it was cast away as useless, or was used as a material of roads only. Now it is thrown, while hot, into moulds, of different figures and dimensions, and thus becomes an admirable building material. It is proof against all seasons, in every situation; consequently, becomes an excellent material for foundations; and still more valuable for copings of fence walls; for which use it is sometimes cast of a semi-elliptical form. It is also used as quoins, in brick buildings; in which case, the blocks are run about nine inches square, and eighteen inches long. It is of a dark copper colour and has the appearance of a rich metal; but flies under the hammer as flint.”
