Geocache Description:

Ring-billed Gulls (Larus delawarensis) are the most common gull here in Michigan, and are the most likely to be found away from coastal areas. They often congregate around humans, at garbage dumps, parking lots, and freshly plowed fields. Adults are clean gray above, with a white head, body and tail; their black wingtips are spotted with white. They have yellow legs and a yellow bill with a black band around it. Nonbreeding adults have brown-streaked heads. During their first two years, Ring-billed Gulls are a motley brown and gray with a pink bill and legs. Ring-billed gulls nest in colonies numbering from 20 to tens of thousands of pairs. They build their nests on the ground near freshwater, usually on low, sparsely vegetated terrain. They may nest on sandbars, rocky beaches, driftwood, bare rock, concrete, or soil. They often choose sites near or underneath low plants to hide them from aerial predators. Nest sites tend to be used for multiple seasons, by new or returning pairs.

The word "seagull" does not appear in any ornithological context, it is only used by the uninformed. The proper term is "gulls", or their proper name.

They are easily caught in parking lots for bird banding purposes using only bread and a landing net. After about 2 or 3 captures though, they catch on, and will not come for the bait. They are sometimes called "giant rats with wings" which explains the container I used. Thanks to andiwr for the container. Please do not force the log holder in too far. You will need to bring your own writing tool to sign the log. There is plenty of parking on the wide road shoulder.
