The history of Selden Normal Industrial Institute, Brunswick, GA
Selden Park opened as a park in 1950, but originally the land was the site of The Selden Normal Industrial Institute. The Selden Normal Industrial Institute created intermediate education for African-Americans in Brunswick and the coastal area. In 1892 Rev. Samuel Dent Sr. introduced the idea to Rev. H.A. Bleach, a future principle of the school, while they were both students at Morehouse College.
They brought the idea to Miss Carrie Bemus, an instructor at the college and another future principle of Selden. After putting all of her own money into the endeavor, Miss Bemus asked her friend E.P. Selden, a steel industrialist in Pennsylvania and his brother Dr. Charles Selden, who was a missionary to China, for financial assistance. Dr. Selden traveled to Brunswick and purchased the land for the school. The school was named for him. In 1903, The Selden Normal Industrial Institute opened. The courses fell under two categories of study: academic and practical industrial trades.
From 1909-1933 courses in Cooking, Domestic Science, Sewing, Millinery, Farming, Gardening, Carpentry, Shoemaking, Nurses Training, Teacher Training and Business were offered at the school. In 1933 the school closed and and consolidated with the Gillespie Institute in Cordele, GA. The Selden Institute was an important part of the African-American community in Brunswick and the surrounding area.
