This thoroughbred retirement facility has put a new face on the concept of equine aftercare. Its mission is to provide a dignified retirement for thoroughbreds, champions and "unknowns" alike whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end. Founded in 2003 the organization has grown from a leased paddock and one horse to a 136-acre farm, a herd of over 175 rescued and retired horses, and two satellite facilities: one located at Cabin Creek in Greenfield Center, New York and the other at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Kentucky.
This facility tested the concept by opening its doors to the public, inviting fans to revisit their turf heroes. Now a “living-history museum of horse racing”, the farm attracts nearly 20,000 visitors annually who come to swoon over such American Grade 1 winners as Breeders’ Cup Champions Amazombie, Little Mike and Alphabet Soup, Belmont Stakes winners Sarava and Touch Gold, and three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude. The farm is also home to Kentucky Derby and Preakness champions Silver Charm and War Emblem, each repatriated from stud duties overseas.
Hard-knockers like Swan’s Way, whose resume boast 81 starts and only eight wins, Easy Grades, a one-time Kentucky Derby contender who ended up struggling in 5K claimers at the age of nine and Mikethespike who toiled for 10 years and made 125 starts before injuries ended his career.
In 2014 this facility was rewarded with a Special Eclipse Award honoring extraordinary service in the sport of Thoroughbred racing.
You will meet our equine residents and learn about their careers and lives. Each horse has a very individual story. Some were rescued from very bad situations, others were kindly donated by their owners. Some of them were fantastic race horses, others didn't earn anything but our respect.
Come on out, find the geocache and stamp your passport. Please caching during daytime hours of operation only. Also please do not wander the grounds. This is private property and you can tour the grounds when you sign up inside the visitors building.
This geocache is one of 12 geocaches that comprise the Scott County Geotrot. Passports are to be given out at the August 12, 2017 Scott County Geotrot event. Geocachers will visit all 12 geocaches along the trail and stamp the corresponding block on the passport and turn it in for a prize as supplies last. After the event, passports will be available both inside the Georgetown-Scott County Tourism office located at 399 Outlet Center Drive, Georgetown, Kentucky and outside the tourism office in the designated Scott County Geotrot passport box after hours. Completed passports can be turned in here as well.
Please remember to leave the designated stamp and ink pad inside of the geocache containers! Permission to hide geocaches has been obtained by the property owners.
