The Cemetery was started in 1852 by ten citizens who were willing to bury their dead in the uninviting grounds belonging to the city, with no intention, however of making it a public cemetery. But when many people began to see improvements being made they insisted on buying lots for their loved ones. The managers were eager to sell lets for the huge sum of $10.00 each. With this success they gave ample notice and raised the price to $15.00 and later up to $25.00 per lot. It has since increased more. There is a Historical Marker approximately 120 feet west of ground zero that also gives more of the histroy of the cemetery. Permission has been requested to place the cache. You do not have to go into the cemetery to locate GZ, but many stones make it very interesting. In the event there is a service going on at the time you come, please return at a later time. If entering please be reverent. There is plenty of parking on the street next to the cemetery
