Geocache Description:

48 State Cache Dash Introduction (GC79X8F)

This series of caches is intended to be a simulation of my 48 state trip, but on a much smaller scale, more or less making a counter-clockwise circuit of Dane county. If done in one trip, it will take several hours, depending on how long each stop is, and will cover somewhere in the neighborhood of 160 miles.

A few notes…

-Look for the state stickers on the beacons.
-They are all park and grabs.
-Most are winter friendly, some are not.
-Almost all caches are on road signs, a few guard rails.
-Look for magnetic key holders, pill bottles, or homemade pvc containers.
-All log times in the trip descriptions are Central Time.
-If using a cell phone for searching, there are some areas where the signal may be weak or lost altogether.
-If traveled in the intended order, most of the caches will be on the right side of the road, others might need a quick u turn.

There are only a couple of interesting highlights on this leg. Not long after grabbing a smiley for California, I had to cruise back north through Lakeville in order to catch hwy 140 and head east towards Nevada and eventually Utah. Shamefully I hadn’t bathed or showered since I left home two days prior. I didn’t think I smelled gross or anything, and since it was just me on the trip, I didn’t have to worry about offending anyone other than myself. However, since this highway was following a creek that meandered through the hills, I wondered what it would be like to take a dip in a mountain stream. I found a spot that I could pull over and that seemed secluded enough. I pulled over and scoped out the creek and found it to be flowing faster than I thought it would be. Even though it was May, the mountain runoff was still keeping the creek full and running quickly. I found a spot just off the bank that was maybe 12 to 18 inches deep and where the water was slow enough to leave me in the place I wanted to take a dunk. Off came the clothes, sans shoes in order to walk on the stony creek bed, and I crouched down into the icy running stream. Even that close to the bank, the water was very forceful and tremendously COLD! Might have been better off doing a polar plunge. I found that I was taking very short breaths and it was hard to control my breathing even for just those few seconds. Up out of the water and back to the shoreline to put my clothes back on, I headed back up to the van and it was time to hit the road again.

The other highlight on this leg of the journey was a climb up the side of Antelope Butte just north of the Nevada border. I was headed along Oregon Highway 140 towards Denio Junction, Nevada, for my next cache. In this area, once the highway comes off of the Greaser Ridge through Blizzard Gap, it stretches for 10 miles across the Guano Valley before running into what looks like a massive wall called Doherty Slide. Do an image search to get an idea of what this terrain looks like. If you have Google Earth, it looks more impressive than a photo could show. Standing at the bottom looking at the plateau to the east, the wall rises about a thousand feet from the valley. As I traveled up the 3 mile edge side of this edifice, it looked like if you veered off the road, you would fall off the planet. Rock wall on one side, nothing but valley floor to the other. Loved every second of it!

The rest of the trip to my Nevada cache was pretty much just meandering desert highway with really nothing exciting unless you like desert terrain like me. Grabbed two caches at a rest stop and eventually arrived in Denio to find the cache safe and sound on the back of a small billboard. Signed the log, wrote some notes in my journal, and was on my way again.

Sunny Desert Departure Time – 3:50 pm
