Peek through the gates to see what was once a lush place of rest and rehabilitation until we can open it as a park for all to enjoy its sense of peace. People drive and walk past this historic location on a daily basis and are unaware of its importance or even it's existence. The container is stocked with trades including Rockhaven themed items and a one of a kind FTF button.
Rockhaven Sanitarium was founded in 1923 by Agnes Richards to be run by women for women with mild mental and nervous disorders to give them an opportunity to recover instead of being locked away. It is an early example of Cottage Care, giving women individualized care in a homelike setting. Women like Billy Burke lived here, Peggy Fears, Babe Egan, Vaudeville performer Marion Rose, even Marilyn Monroe's mother, Gladys Ely Baker made a few escapes. All the women here made amazing contributions to their communities; all the women who cared for them made an amazing difference to them and their families! In operation until 2006 the property is 3.5 acres with buildings from 1920 through 1939 (and one from 1972). The Craftsman Cottages were altered from homes to spaces for several residents. The Spanish Colonial Revival buildings were designed and built by the Prescott Brothers of Glendale. Wrought iron work done by The Huntington Iron Works of La Canada. Tiles inside (and a few outside) the dorms Ms Richards had build are of outstanding quality and colors. We are hoping this will one day soon be a park with a museum, restaurant, tea shop, wine shop, art, therapy, antiques, and women-owned businesses. Note: The container has been placed in such a way that it should stand out and be obvious to cachers, yet blend into it's surroundings for those unaware of the game. You do not need to go inside the grounds to retrieve the cache, nor do you need to rummage through the bushes. When returning the container, please take care to leave it so that it looks like it belongs there.
