Between 1758 and 1854 over 1500 people were buried in the graveyard next to this cache. They rejected the Anglican Church of the day and as such were not permitted to be buried in Anglican cemeteries. Their solution was to acquire a plot of land to the south of Magdalen Street in which to bury their dead
In 1854 the rules forbidding dissenters from being buried in Anglican cemeteries were rescinded and the plot fell out of use in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
In the 1980s the site was sold to a succession of developers, all of whom were unsuccessful in obtaining permission to develop it. The current owner was sympathetic to the idea of preserving the site and the Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust was formed to restore and renovate the site.
Through a mix of donations and grant funding work continues on the site so please fell free to post photos of the progress when you visit this cache.
