The Road that Never Was Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Genius Loci: I really regret having to archive my first cache (one of Chicagoland's oldest surviving hides), especially now that the cachesite has been converted from a golf course into a natural area. However, I'm getting ready to move out of state, and will no longer be able to maintain it.

It had a great run; thanks to all who came to visit!

Geocache Description:

A short two-part multicache, fun and easy. Be discreet; this can be a busy area.

Although it was on the maps for years, this road was never opened to automobile traffic. Plotted at the height of one of the North Shore's expansion periods early in the 1900's, housing developers with dreams of profitable subdivisions set their sights on the empty acres in this posh suburb, and planned a major access street into the area.

Construction commenced, grading was begun, utilities and water lines were installed. But then something happened to throw their grandiose plans into ruin, and the roadway was never finished, let alone the mansions intended for the 'millionaires' of 1929. The site stood empty until decades later, when many of the housing lots were incorporated into a golf course. Some of them (and the right-of-way for the road) remained undeveloped, and were soon reclaimed by mother nature. Meanwhile, maps continued to mislead motorists by indicating the existence of a road that never really was.

After years of being a street only on paper, an actual bicycle trail was finally constructed in place of the erstwhile road. It winds now through a lovely little woodland, and if you're lucky, you may discover the last traces of the stillborn subdivision that linger yet in this tiny bit of wilderness.

Today, the area is home to an easy, two-part multicache (it's rated 1.5 because you need to find two caches). First you'll need to find a minicache, then use the coordinates supplied there to find the final, regular cache. The logbook and goodies are stashed in the final cachebox.

For those arriving by car, permission has been granted to park at N 42° 11.354 x W 87° 49.085 (the bicycle trailhead) so please avail yourself of this opportunity to park legally. Almost all of the walking will be along the paved bike trail; and bushwhacking is minimal (although there is a bit of poison ivy in the area).

You'll be visiting a natural area sandwiched between two golf courses, and there's no need to cross fences or trespass on the course greens themselves. Dogs on leashes are welcome. As with so many suburban caches, you'll want to keep your searching activities very discreet, for you'll be in view of the bike trail most of the time.
