A roadside plaque with memories of Murphy Town.
The widespread surveying of Homestead Leases or Workingmen’s Blocks took place in the 1880’s and 1890’s to increase the population of rural areas and assist workers to provide for their families. Most blocks were 20 acres and many were spread throughout the district. More than 100 blocks were surveyed at Wongyarra beside the Rocky River and northwards to the junction of the Port Germein Gorge Road and the Main North Road. The cluster of blocks situated in this locality became known as Murphy Town - because of John Murphy who was the owner of section14.
