DEADWOOD PIONEER CEMETERY History:
The Pope family homestead was established at the mouth of Deadwood Creek on approx 75 acres; the first known family burial took place on a bluff above the confluence of Deadwood Creek and Lake Creek in 1883, and in 1893 Nancy Pope deeded 1 acre to the local church and cemetery. Since then, it has evolved from being a family graveyard to a community cemetery. Over 250 graves have proper headstones; another 22 are known and soon to be marked, and nearly 50 more souls are attributed here but unverified.
The current Board of Trustees is energetic and active, and is hosting annual Pioneer Heritage Day potlucks on Memorial Day, with living history reenactments, family-friendly and educational activities. Future improvements include a log-style gazebo, military memorial, landscaping and an ash scattering garden.
