A simple traditional cache place on the power line service track up Mahakipawa (or Mahaki Paoa) Hill.
I placed this cache while climbing this hill from the track access point nearest Havelock.
However, if you have the choice I would recommend taking the route from Cullen Pt car park. (See Waypoint). This route is longer, but less steep, less rutted, wider and much less likely to be obstructed by gorse. Even so, care should still be taken as it can be slippery getting up here when wet.
A bit of history on the name of the hill then. According to W.H Sherwood Roberts (on the webpage below), Mahaki Paoa is the correct spelling. He appears to give two possible translations - the first, it is translated as 'tame ducks'; or 'the place where teal ducks were not shy'. Paoa, he says, therefore means 'teal', contributing to other place names such as Opawa / Opaoa (place of the teal); and Waipawa / Waipaoa (water of the teal).
The second, and seemingly more likely, recounts how at a Maori cremation the friends of the deceased would chant 'Mahaki Paoa' when the smoke from the cremation rose calmly (in itself a good omen), therefore 'Paoa' is translated as smoke.

The latter seems more feasible to me. In an article on the Stuff website (http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/75398350/Marlboroughs-rivers-mountains-bays-change-to-Maori-names), it is mentioned that Ngati Rarua translated the Opaoa River as 'smoking river'. Furthermore, the online Maori dictionary translates teal only as 'Pateke'; and 'Paoa' only as smoke. This is backed up by P.M Ryan's 'Revised Dictionary of Modern Maori', where again there is no mention of 'Paoa' translating as 'teal'.
