La mofeta di Borboi EarthCache

Questa earthcache vi farà conoscere un raro fenomeno geologico, che permette di studiare l'effetto di alcuni gas sugli ecosistemi.

La mofeta di Borboi è situata nei boschi a sud di Orciatico, nelle Colline Pisane. Le mofete sono manifestazioni vulcaniche secondarie in fase finale con emissione fredda dei gas presenti nel sottosuolo, in particolare l'anidride carbonica. Altri esempi di emissioni gassose di origine vulcanica sono le fumarole, le solfatare e le putizze. Le mofete sono presenti in diversi paesi, la particolarità della mofeta di Borboi è che l'emissione avviene in una pozza d'acqua lungo un piccolo torrente tributario del Fosce, all'interno di un bosco mediterraneo. Questo la rende particolarmente interessante per studiare gli effetti dell'aumento della concentrazione di anidride carbonica sugli ecosistemi, fattore strettamente legato all'effetto serra e al cambiamento climatico.

Uno studio del CNR ha mostrato che i lecci situati nelle vicinanze della mofeta crescono più rapidamente per effetto della maggiore concentrazione di anidride carbonica. In generale, le foglie degli alberi cresciuti vicino alla mofeta sono di dimensioni maggiori di quelle di alberi cresciuti altrove.

Per raggiungere la mofeta, potete parcheggiare al waypoint indicato. Da qui si supera la sbarra e seguendo le indicazioni e i pannelli illustrativi si arriva alla mofeta.Le frecce di legno senza niente scritto sopra portano alla mofeta. ATTENZIONE!!! Nei pressi della mofeta le concentrazioni di anidride carbonica sono molto alte e potenzialmente tossiche, non è raro vedere piccoli animali morti. Non superare le barriere, sono state messe per un motivo.

2. Prima che possiate vedere la mofeta, è probabile che altri due sensi vi indichino che vi trovate vicini. Descrivete queste percezioni sensoriali. In particolare, a cosa sono dovute?
3. Recatevi alle coordinate della cache, che corrispondono all'angolo più evidente della recinzione. In quale direzione si trova la mofeta (punto cardinale o azimut)?
4. Descrivete con parole vostre la mofeta e il torrente. Verso quale direzione scorre?
5. Qual è la concentrazione in ppm dell'anidride carbonica alla mofeta?

The Borboi mofetta is located in the woods south of Orciatico, in the Pisane Hills. Mofettas are volcanic secondary manifestations in the final phase with cold emission of the gases present in the soil, particularly carbon dioxide. Other examples of volcanic gas emissions are fumaroles, solfataras and mudpots. Mofettas are present in several countries, the peculiarity of Borboi's mofetta is that gas emission occurs in a puddle of water along a small tributary stream of Fosce, within a Mediterranean forest. This makes it particularly interesting to study the effects of increased carbon dioxide concentration on ecosystems, a factor closely related to greenhouse effect and climate change.

A study by CNR showed that holm oaks grown near the mofetta grow faster as a result of the higher concentration of carbon dioxide. In general, the leaves of the trees grown near the mofetta are larger than those of trees grown elsewhere.

In order to get to the mofetta, you can park at the indicated waypoint. From here you will cross the bar and following the directions and the illustrations panel you get to the mofetta.The wooden arrows without anything written above lead to the mofetta. The mofetta is particularly spectacular if it has rained recently.

CAUTION!!! Near the mofetta the concentrations of carbon dioxide are very high and potentially toxic, it is not uncommon to see small dead animals. Do not overcome the barriers, they were put there for a reason.
