Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soil, and minerals, as well as wood and artificial materials through contact with the earth's atmosphere, water and biological organisms. Weathering occurs on site with little or no movement which differentiates it from erosion, in that erosion involves the movement of rocks or minerals by agents such as water. There are 2 classifications of weathering processes, physical and chemical weathering. Physical weathering involves the breakdown of rocks and soil through direct comtact with atmospheric conditions, such as heat, water, ice and pressure. Chemical weathering involves the direct effect of atmospheric chemicals or biologically produced chemicals also known as biological weathering in the breakdown of rocks, soils, and minerals. Physical weathering is accentuated in very cold or very dry environments while chemical weathering are most intense where the climate is wet and hot. This area was once under water which led to sediments being turned into sedimentary rock. There are three types of sedimentary rock: Clastic - which includes briccia, conglomerate, and siltstone. Chemical - which includes rock salt, iron ore, flint Organic - which includes coal, dolomites, limestones. In order to log this earth cache please use what you have learned to answer the following questions. 1. What is the length of the rock formation. 2. What type of weathering has shaped the rock formation into what it looks like today. 3. What type of rock is the rock formation made up of? While not required feel free to post a picture of yourself at the gz
