Geocache Description:

An outdoor event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Date: Sunday 25th June 2017

Start time: 1.00pm

Finish time: 2.00pm

As fans of Harry Potter will already know Hogsmeade railway station is located near the Black Lake, and from there a road extends around the lake to Hogwarts Castle. It is actually quite the distance from the village itself, being on the opposite side of the Hogwarts grounds. The Hogwarts Express stops here after travelling from King's Cross Station's Platform Nine and Three-Quarters which like Diagon Alley, Muggles cannot penetrate. At the station is a small group of buildings, the largest being a resting place for the conductor of the train. Not far down from these buildings are entrance gates to Hogwarts that are located in a clearing in the Forbidden Forest that leads up to the school grounds. Also at the end of the platform, boats are docked awaiting the arrival of Groundskeeper Rubeus Hagrid and the First years.

The railway scenes in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone were filmed at London King's Cross station where Harry boarded the Hogwarts Express on platform nine and three quarters. The aerial train shots were filmed in Northdale and Newtondale Forest (between 3 and 5 miles south of the event co-ordinates) and Goathland station was transformed into Hogsmeade station for the duration of the filming. The railway scenes were filmed in October 2000

Close to the event is a traditional Sidetracked cache GC33QBZ and virtual virtual cache GC5CB9.

Side Tracked caches have become a nationwide series of caches for public transport users. They are intended to provide quick cache-and-dashes at or nearby railway stations. Caches can be found close to stations of the national rail network and well as heritage railways. For more information on the SideTracked series of caches can be found at click here.
