Coronation Viewpoint, Greenwich
Coronation Viewpoint is a lookout located on Pacific Highway south of Osborne Road. This is a small level grassed area looking south with district views towards city and mountains. There is parking for 10 cars. Seats and gardens are at this lookout.
The land for this viewpoint was acquired by Council in 1935/1936. The name was applied to the park in 1938 to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937. The locality indicator was provided to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and dedicated in 1954.
Lane Cove Council also had air-raid trenches dug in the reserve during World War II.
In 1967 the Rotary Club of Lane Cove proposed a plan for the beautification of Coronation Viewpoint as its annual Community Service Project. The plan included making a focal point for the park which included a fountain. The final design included a fountain with sculpture and water features. The sculpture was designed by Otto Steen and named the Rotary International Fountain. The overall project was overseen by Loyal G. Figgis of Figgis & Jefferson Architects and was completed in 1968, with the official opening & unveiling by Mayor Archibald W. Mackinnon on 9 July 1968.
Please replace cache as found, and beware of the muggle factor as it is a popular place for lunch breaks, and there are units either side of the park.
FTF goes to JordsAU & Sunhalo @ 15:05 - Congratulations!
