This will be a brief gathering of just 30 minutes in the morning, before you continue with your geocaching and other activities for the day. Being a flash mob, attendees should not arrive before 09:30 and should disperse promptly at 10:00. The logbook will be available for signing at the meeting point during this period only.
Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, so there is a good reason for geocaching.com to promote this as an “event” day. But do you know that, other than being Canada Day, 1 July is also celebrated around the world as:
- Day of Officials and Civil Servants in Hungary
- El dia del Amigo (Friendship Day) in Peru
- Engineer’s Day in Bahrain and Mexico
- Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day
- Independence Day in Burundi, Rwanda and Somalia
- International Co-operative Day
- International Free Hugs Day
- July Morning in Bulgaria
- Madeira Day
- Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador
- Moving Day in Quebec
- National Doctors’ Day in India
- Republic Day in Ghana
- Tartan Day in Australia and New Zealand
- Territory Day in the British Virgin Islands
- Van Mahotsav (Festival of Trees) in India
So there is something for everyone. Perhaps a flash mob of tartan-wearing Wellington public servants having free hugs around the Civic Square under some maple (or punga) trees on a July morning?
All geocachers are welcome.
The venue is centrally located in Wellington, close to public transport. It is also near the City Gallery Wellington, where the current exhibitions include Petra Cortright: Running Neo-Geo Games Under MAME. Intrigued? You could check it out in the Gallery which conveniently opens at 10:00 … just after the flash mob event finishes. Entry is free.
Oh, you can also earn the Canada Day 2017 souvenir by attending this event (or any other geocaching event on Saturday, 1 July or Sunday, 2 July, 2017).
Hope to see you there.
