This spot along the towpath of the Enlarged Erie Canal (1845-1916) and on the eastern bank of the Schoharie Creek, meant you were near Lock 30 and the Browns Cash Store. While entire families sometimes lived on the canal during the navigation season, at this point in time many of the barges were company owned. Nevertheless, supplies were needed along the way and canal stores dotted the waterway to service boatmen, mules, and the towns they were near. Lock 30 was a hub of activity as it lifted barges on or lowered off the elevation needed to cross the splendid 624 ft 14 arch aqueduct that put the canal over the ancient Schoharie Creek.
