The nearest building is the oldest structure at Schoharie Crossing and portions of it pre-date the “Clinton’s Ditch” that was the original Erie Canal right next to it. The Enders House is named for the Enders Family who occupied it from the early 19th century into the early 20th century. Rev. Enders served in the Civil War as a chaplain of the 153rd Regt. The family intermarried into another well connected local family - the Voorhees. Rev. Enders lost his barns during an electrical storm in the spring of 1900, though they were quickly rebuilt and the family continued to prosper.
The excitement of the canal passing through the hamlet of Fort Hunter was just another course in its global significance. The Enders House has an even older history with an 18th century foundation that indicates it was originally the location of a Mohawk cabin. The Mohawk Nation had a village at the confluence of the Schoharie Creek and Mohawk River and an English alliance lead to Fort Hunter being built nearby in 1712.
