Um lago é uma depressão natural na superfície da Terra que contém permanentemente uma quantidade variável de água. Essa água pode ser proveniente da chuva, duma nascente local, ou de curso de água, como rios e glaciares geleiras que desaguem nessa depressão.

A quantidade de água que um lago contém depende do clima regional. As dimensões dos lagos são muito variáveis, desde alguns metros até várias centenas de quilómetros, como são os Grandes Lagos da América do Norte ou os Grandes lagos Africanos. A sua profundidade também varia desde alguns centímetros até várias centenas de metros - o Lago Baikal, na Sibéria, é o mais profundo do mundo, com 1680 metros.

O estudo ecológico dos lagos designa-se por limnologia.

A lake is a natural depression on the surface of the Earth that contains permanently a variable amount of water. This water may come from rain, from a local spring, or from a watercourse, such as rivers and glaciers glaciers that flow into this depression.

The amount of water a lake contains depends on the regional climate. The dimensions of the lakes vary greatly from a few meters to several hundred kilometers, such as the Great Lakes of North America or the Great Lakes of Africa.
