In the 1630s, a fortified Mahican Village existed on Peebles Island. It was called Menomonee’s Castle by the Dutch who named it for the chief who lived there. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Indians came here to fish for sturgeon and dry them over slow fires.
Cache can be accessed from Red Trail and is near Perimeter Trail.
