In 1909, Cluett, Peabody & Co., a Troy-based manufacturer of men’s collars and shirts, bought Peebles Island and ran a successful operation bleaching cloth on this site until 1972. The process of sanforization (preshrinking fabric prior to making garments) was pioneered at the Peebles Island factory. The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has owned the island since the early 1970s.
This cache is located near the remaining industrial buildings on the property which now house the Peebles Island Resource Center which is home to New York’s federal and state historic preservation, conservation, and heritage programs.
This cache is not part of the 2017 NYS Parks Saratoga/Capital District Regional Geocache Challenge. It has been placed for your geocaching pleasure. Enjoy!
