Gummies Bush Traditional Cache

Gummies Bush is a thriving farming district between Riverton and Otautau in Western Southland.

It supposedly got its name from a man by the name of James Leader, who was nicknamed Gummie, because he had no teeth.

He was a Whaler and a Pig Farmer and he lived in the bush, hence Gummies Bush.

This is the site of the Gummies Bush School, which was open for 82 years between 1866 and 1948.

Great Aunty DORA went to school here, before she set FOOT and EXPLORED the world on her own.
