Geocache Description:

Along the outer edges of the Taipei Basin can be found high quality stone. At the end of 19th century, the Qing government decided to construct the new city of Taipei. To consider the quality of the stone and the convenience of transport, the Qing government chose the andesite found in the mountains of Neihu and Dazhi. It beacme the official quarry that provided the material to build the city wall.

The picture shows the possible route that the stone transport from quarry to Old Taipei City.

In addition to serving as material for the city wall, Neihu stone was also widely used as building material by the general population throughout the Japanese colonial period and following World War II. After the war, since the quarry was not valuable anymore, the quarry was abandoned and gradually forgotten by the world. To celebrate the new year of 1996, people barbecued at the south of the JinMian mountain and caused the fire. The accident let the quarry been known to everyone again.

Recently, the Neihu Quarry was closed for the sake of environmental conservation. Signs of excavation are still readily visible, as is a slope specially made to slide stones down the mountain-evidence of the history of Old Taipei's construction. Due to the history of the Old Taipei City, it's the only quarry that becomes the historical relic in Taiwan.
