Geocache Description:

I have visited here many times, this time I leave with an even better appreciation for the area.

Doctor's Cove along the ECT (East Coast Trail) sits between the community of Bauline East and the abandoned village of Lamanche.

The rocks are in this cove were formed from fine sand grains that were washed into the ocean about 620 million years ago.
Each time a load of sand or silt was washed in, it formed a distinct horizontal layer (known in geology as a bed). This is what you see at this location.

When silt or mud is washed in before the next layer of sand, this makes the layering more prominent. The layers of rocks you see here are tilted due to all the rocks in the area being squeezed about 570 million years ago.

The sedimentary and volcanic rocks on the Avalon Peninsula and as far west as Glovertown have all been buckled in the same orientation as you see here. The same can be seen on the road to Cape Spear. However, the layers change their direction of inclination from dipping to the east at Signal Hill and the Narrows to dipping west at Cape Spear.

To claim the find for this cache you must answer the following questions:  Please do not post your answers, send them to me.  Any answers that are posted online will be deleted.

1.  What type of rock make up the large layered rocks that are scattered around GZ.

2.  When you are standing at GZ, the flat rock surface that you are standing on has very distinct lines that travel in what direction?

3.  What does the elevation on your GPS show when you are standing at GZ?

4.  Optional:  Post a picture of Doctor's Cove with either you or your GPS in the picture.  The area will allow for some fantastic photo's so even if you choose not to post a picture, be sure to take lots for your own collection.
