Geocache Description:

Holy Trinity, Southwell

HOLY TRINITY, SOUTHWELL

Holy Trinity, Southwell is a Grade II listed building having achieved the status on 9 February 1973. The boundary wall is also a listed building, having been listed on the same day.

The church was built between 1844-1846 by Weightman & Hadfield of Sheffield to a cost of £2,500. Money was raised by public subscription but the majority (£2,000) was donated by Mrs Catherine Heathcote who ran elmfield House School on the Burgage. The church is early English in style and consists of a wets tower with spire, nave with clerestorey, north porch, vestry and chancel.

The tower is three staged with an octagonal stair turret. The North aisle has three memorial windows dated 1892, 1914 and 1918. The south aisle also has three memorial windows dated 1890, 1912 and 1917. The stained glass in the East end dates from 1894. The pulpit is elaborate traceried oak, in keeping with the Victorian style of the build date. A wall mounted, marble war memorial tablet dated 1919 is also inside the church.
