U2 formed in 1976 when the members were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. This song is an example of what would become The Edge's distinctive guitar style. He felt he could play only a few notes, but make it work by finding the right ones.
Bono wrote the lyrics to "I Will Follow" in tribute to his mother who died when he was 14 years old. It is the only song that U2 have performed on every tour since they released their first album.
