Née  à  Langres  en  Champagne,  le  12 novembre 1606, Jeanne Mance s'initie de bonne
heure à son rôle futur. Sa compassion éveillée par les horreurs de la guerre de Trente Ans,
lui  apprend à soigner les blessés. EIle rêve depuis longtemps de se dévouer aux missions
dans la Nouvelle-France. Encouragée et protegée par Madame de Bullion, la grande bien-
faitrice inconnue, elle décide de passer au Canada pour y fonder un hôpital.
Jeanne-Mance embarque à Larochelle en mai 1641 et aborde trois mois plus tard en Nou-
velle-France.  Jusqu'au  mois  de  mai suivant, elle fait un époustoufflant travail de mise en
place.  Elle  mettra  sur  pied  l’hôpital  de Ville-Marie, le premier Hôtel-Dieu. Elle en sera la
seule administratrice pendant 31 ans. Le 8 octobre 1645, l’hôpital de Ville-Marie était un bâ-
timent construit en bois et mesurait soixante pieds de long sur vingt-quatre de large. Il com-
prenait,  à  l’intérieur,  une  cuisine et une chambre pour mademoiselle Mance et une autre
pour  les  servantes  ainsi que deux pièces pour les malades. Ce premier hôpital servit jus-
qu’en 1654, alors qu’il fut remplacé par une autre construction plus vaste.


Born  at  Langres  in Champagne, on 12 November 1606, Jeanne Mance was initially intro-
duced to her future role. Her compassion awakened by the horrors of the Thirty Years' War,
teaches  her  how  to  treat the wounded. She has long dreamed of devoting herself to mis-
sions in New France. Encouraged and protected by Madame de Bullion, the great unknown
benefactress,  she  decided  to go to Canada to found a hospital. Jeanne Mance embarked
at Larochelle in May 1641 and arrived three months later in New France. Until the following
May,  she  is  doing  a stunning job of setting up. She will set up the hospital of Ville-Marie,
the first Hôtel-Dieu. She will be the sole director for 31 years. On October 8, 1645, the Ville-
Marie Hospital was a wooden building measuring sixty feet long by twenty-four wide. It con-
tained,  inside,  a kitchen and a room for Mademoiselle Mance and another for the maidser-
vants and two rooms for the sick. This first hospital served until 1654, when it was replaced
by another larger structure.

trouve  du  côté Ouest, tout en étant du côté opposé à la rue Saint-Laurent. Vous cherchez
une bison aimantée à l'extrémité gauche.

the west side, while being on the opposite side of St. Lawrence Street. Looking for a magne-
tic bison at the left end.
