Arthur Pendragon wordt vergezeld op zijn reis door een gevleugelde metgezel, een papegau, soort papegaai. Dit was een exotisch huisdier, geprezen door rijke heren in de middeleeuwen vanwege zijn zeldzaamheid, zijn kwaliteiten, zijn esthetisch voorkomen, zijn taalkundigheid en zijn loyaliteit. De papegau of popinjay speelt de rol van minestreel. De papegau zingt over de dappere daden van zijn meester en de dame met het blonde haar.
