This is one of several ornate entryways to this urban national park. After more than 200 years as a military post, the Presidio became a national park in 1994. The nearby stone carved imagery bears homage to the park's past. Take some time to notice the details of the artwork here. Each face of the stone columns tells a different story of symbolism.
A picture guide to the meanings of the stone carvings can be found in the geocache box! More details can be enjoyed here: http://www.artandarchitecture-sf.com/presidios-arguello-gate.html
