The Brunsville Iowa old jail, is -- open and unused, was built in 1911, same year Brunsville was incorporated. The 12-foot by 15-foot block and brick brig features two cells, a couple of windows with iron bars, and a hole where a pot-belly stove once connected to the chimney. The stove is gone, as are locks on cell doors. Info is from the recent Sioux City Journal article , a visitors log is also provided not far from the cache
Jailer Builders First Ones Locked Up --- Around the time Brunsville was incorporated in 1911, two local men were hired to build the jail. The two completed their work and received their pay. It was just before Brunsville was to host a celebration but the two started celebrating earlier. They headed to a tavern downtown, spent their pay on alcohol and drank until they became rowdy. The town cop grabbed one by the collar and the town deputy grabbed the other one by his collar and threw the two into the jailhouse they had just built. A short time later , the two were back in the tavern, drinking away. No one had let them out. They were taken back to jail. Shortly thereafter they were back in the bar. This time after they were locked up , the cop watched the jail to observe how they were escaping. He discovered the two men had planned for their futures when they had built the jail. They had left three blocks loose and once the blocks were pushed out, the men would crawl through the hole and then move the blocks back into place. Soon after the cop's discovery, Iron cells and a stucco exterior completed the jail.
