Tunnel Vision Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

slmf0521: I went out to check on things and retrieve the broken container on March 25. I did notice the purple paint on 2 trees, but it almost looked like they "marked" the trees, like the do for logging. I go past here often so the past few week I've been noticing that there is a lot more cars and ATV trailers etc parked there most times. So sadly, I've decided to just archive this one. The tunnel is accessible from other side, so I'm considering a different type cache there.

Geocache Description:

This cache brings you to one of the marvels of the Allegheny Portage Railroad; it is considered an amazing example of early 19th century masonry.  This is the Bens Creek Culvert. This bridge over Bens Creek, near the village of Cassandra, was built in 1832 to transport the cars of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. It is still used today, 185 years later, by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, as part of the State Route 53 and Portage Street intersection.

Central Pennsylvania, and specfically Cambria County, has an extensive history of the railroad.  The Allegheny Portage Railroad operated in this area from 1834 to 1854.  In 1854,  the Allegheny Portage Railroad was rendered obsolete by the advance of railway technology - more powerful locomotives allowed construction by the Pennsylvania Railroad of a railroad over the Alleghenies.  On July 31, 1857, the Pennsylvania Railroad bought the Allegheny Portage Railroad from the state, abandoning most and using the rest as local branches. Please use the provided parking waypoint. Take the road/quad trail that you see here and then make a left into the wooded area. There is minor bushwhacking to get to the cache.  The cache is less then 0.2 miles from parking.  When you arrive at GZ, although the cache is fairly close to the stream, there is NO NEED TO CROSS the stream at any time.  Cache is a small lock n lock container.  Please re-hide exactly as found.
