Geocache Description:

<p>An introductory lesson to a bit of history of Ontario's highway system. This current route consists of a mixture of sections of a provincial highway, connecting links and county roads, although at one time none of this highway had any portions under the control of any county road networks.

Note: This section of Wharnecliffe Road is no longer a connecting link. A few years ago (updated May 11/19) Wonderland Road became the 'connecting link' between highway 401 north into the City of London northward through the city and then east to Richmond, thus moving traffic out of the city core.

The section of this road where this geocache is placed is on a 'connecting link' within what is now a part of the City of London, hence in this area of the road you will notice the road signs marking this section of the road have a white '4' on a green background. Signs coloured in this manner indicate a connecting link.

As a provincial highway highway 4 at one time ran from Port Stanley in Elgin County north and eastward to Singhampton, hence serving the counties of Elgin, Middlesex,Huron, Bruce and Grey Counties.

Despite the downloading of much of this provincial highway the road is still signed as '4' as all the counties to which the highway was downloaded for operational reasons designated the former provincial route as county road 4 in their respective counties.

Highway 4 still exists as a provincial highway from the 402 southward to Talbotville.
