Geocache Description:

You are looking for a structure that represents part of Huntley's history.  If you like to read, bring along a book to exchange.

Placed on private property with permission.  Please be respectful.  Cache can be reached from the sidewalk.

Originally situated along the Chicago and North Western Railroad tracks, Huntley’s historic train depot was built around 1851, when the first train came through from Chicago to Huntley. From that time on, the depot was a hub of daily activity. Area farmers drove their milkcan-laden wagons down Woodstock Street or along Main Street to meet the trains that would transport their milk and dairy products to customers in Elgin and Chicago.  In 1890 Huntley was the largest shipping station on the line.

Limited passenger service  was also available. However, with local area milk plants and creameries closing in the 1920s, and better roads and more automobile and truck usage beginning in the 1930s, activity around the train depot began to wane. By the 1950s the trains no longer stopped at Huntley.  By the 1960s, the historic depot was gone.  -- Information provided by the Huntley Area Public Library Local History Department.
