Geocache Description:

You are looking at the first Sister of Mercy Convent in Australia. The geocache is a small film cannister with a log book and a pencil.

The Sisters of Mercy arrived in Perth in 1846 to teach the children of the Colony. This 1871 Convent of Mercy was built when the Sisters and their charges outgrew the original 1848 convent on Victoria Avenue. Today the convent is a heritage centre and if you look through the front  gate at 86 Victoria Square you can see the life size scuplture of Sr Ursula Frayne seated on her travel trunks. The Story of the "Traveller" is on the front wall to right of the front green gate. Behind you is the St Mary's Catholic Cathedral.
