Cache Your Way Question: What is the most common owl resident of McHenry County?

Owl Mythology: In many cultures’ folklore and mythology, owls have often been associated with witchcraft, evil and death. It is believed their nocturnal nature and the noises they make which places them in these mythological roles. There is even a belief that an owl call that is out of the ordinary, such as during the day, that someone you love has passed on. Now a days, most owls are loved and respected. They are even regarded as highly intelligent, often displayed as the wise old owl. Owls, however, are not as intelligent as they appear. It is thought this belief is because of their wide eyes and expressive faces. In reality, they have very small brains.

About the Cache: Pretty straightforward hide. Should be easy as nature provided a great spot but it should be obvious! Either parking area is a nice short walk. During hunting season and after snowfall, the Paulson lot will be closed but you can access parking and the trail in which this cache is on from the Highway 14 lot.

All Geocachers: Please join us in playing! All are welcome who observe and obey the rules. Please do not move or vandalize the container. Please do not remove the log sheet from the container, the answer on the log sheet is an essential piece for cachers completing the Cache Your Way program.

This Site: Located in the northwestern quadrant of the county, Brookdale offers a serene getaway from daily life. Visitors can enjoy a 1 mile mowed grass trail loop that transverses one side of the 11-acre pond, past a wildlife observation deck overlooking the water and up through a former pine plantation. About the Site A picnic shelter and restroom are available on the east side of the pond/Paulson Road entrance, as well as a 1/4 mile paved trail that leads to a handicap accessible fishing pier and small dam where the pond spills into the north branch of the Kishwaukee River.

The Paulsen Road Entrance offers a horse trailer parking lot for up to 10 trailers and is the closer access point to the new 4.5-mile multi-purpose trail. Fishing is allowed in the 11-acre lake with a valid license. Fishermen must obey all State of Illinois fishing regulations and any other posted site-specific regulations.

Picnicking: A reservable picnic shelter with grill is available for up to 80 guests or can be used for free for casual day use individuals and groups less than 15. Cross Country Ski: Due to the steep incline/decline the 1 mile looped trail is considered an advanced cross country ski trail and is not groomed.
