Ölandskalksten
Den kalksten som fyren är byggd av är ölandskalksten. På Öland, men även Gotland, är kalkberggrunden den viktigaste orsaken till att öarna i så många avseenden skiljer sig från resten av landet. Den har gett förutsättningar för den rika floran av orkidéer och andra kalkgynnade arter, sällsynta naturtyper som sjömarker, alvar och raukområden, men även stenindustrin och ett odlingslandskap med få motsvarigheter i världen. Den öländska kalkstenen är avsatt under ordovicium, medan den Gotlänska bildades under silur. Den öländskalkstenen består till mestadels av kalkspat men den innehåller också små mängder av kvarts (som består av mineralet kiseldioxid) och även pyrit (som består av ämnerna järn och svavel, ofta små inslag av nickel, kobolt, koppar, tenn och arsenik). Den gotländska kalkstenen består också mestadels av kalkspat men också även små mängder av lera och sand. Denna skillnad gör att fossilsammansättningen delvis är olika, men den påverkar även dagens växt- och djurliv.

I skiffrarna och kalskstenen finner man flera olika fossil. En vanlig fossilgrupp är ortoceratiterna. De är i själva verket så vanliga att de gett ölandskalkstenen dess geologiska namn, ortocerkalksten. Ortoceratiterna var ett slags bläckfiskar med yttre skal. I kalkstenen finner man också ett nästan runt litet fossil som Linné benämnde ”kristalläpplen”. Fossilet representerar en utdöd grupp tagghudingar, dvs den är en avlägsen släkting till våra nutida sjöborrar. Fossila snäckor, musslor och armfotingar är inte helt ovanliga och inte heller spåren av små, kolonibildande havsdjur, graptoliter är inte heller så ovanliga i den öländska kalkstenen. Den gotländska kalkstenen är rik på korall fossiler som exekpelvis lågo (som linne själv kallar den) och Madrepora. Berggrunden berättar även om jordens utveckling långt före det att människan fanns till. Fossil har fascinerat människor under lång tid. De berättar inte bara om vilka djur som fanns här för flera hundra miljoner år sedan utan även om viktiga geologiska processer och klimatförändringar samt utnyttjas vid åldersbestämning av geologiska lager.

Området har en komplex uppbyggnad där den underliggande kalkstensgrunden spelar stor roll. På kalkstenens uppstickande ryggar har moräner från inlandsisen avsatts och senare påverkats av Östersjöns vatten. En lång rad samverkande processer har alltså byggt upp landskapet och format den märkliga kustlinjen.

Erosion

Erosion är den nednötning och transport av berg, jord eller annat material på grund av en mekanisk eller kemisk påverkan. Erosion kan till exempel orsakas av vind, rinnande vatten, vågor, glaciärer, gravitationsrörelser, levande organismer, men även genom massrörelsernas materialtransport nedför sluttningar. Till skillnad från vittring så förutsätter begreppet erosion att det även sker en bortförsel. Erosion är en naturlig process. Den har tillsammans med de tektoniska processerna format jordytan. På många ställen har människan påverkat den (jordbruk, avskogning, överbetning, väg- och järnvägsbygge), vilket oftast inneburit en högre erosionstakt, speciellt ökad vinderosion. Jorderosion kan leda till igenslamning av vattendrag vilket skadar fisk och korallrev, att odlingsytan och näringsämnen försvinner och risk för översvämningar ökar.

Långe Jan, officiellt namn Ölands södra udde, är en fyr i Ås socken på Öland. Den tändes första gången den första november 1785 efter en byggnadstid på nästan två år. Fyren är belägen längst ned på Ölands södra udde och är en angöringsfyr. Fyren var vid uppförandet 60 alnar hög (ca 36 meter) med en diameter av cirka 12 meter och 197 trappsteg upp till toppen. Fyren är i dag 41,6 meter och därmed Sveriges högsta fyr. Sedan den 5 juni 2008 är fyren ett statligt byggnadsminne. Tidigare var fyren lagskyddad som byggnadsminnesmärke från den 25 januari 1935.

The Gotland limestone is rich in coral fossils, such as lowo (like the linen itself calls it) and Madrepora. The bedrock also tells the earth's development long before humanity existed. Fossil has fascinated people for a long time. They not only tell us about the animals that were found hundreds of millions of years ago, but also about important geological processes and climate change, as well as utilizing age determinations of geological stocks.

The area has a complex structure where the underlying limestone foundation plays a major role.
