Franklin Pierce - 14th President of the United States of America (1853-1857)
Franklin Pierce was the second President to hold office without a Vice President. William Rufus DeVane King was selected but sadly died before taking office Franklin Pierce was the first president to introduce a Christmas tree within the White House He was presented with two "sleeve dogs" from Japan as pets. The dogs were so small that they could sit on a hand; he kept one and gave one away Franklin Pierce's noted accomplishments of his presidency was the additional land acquired from Mexico and the launch of discussions to acquire Alaska from Russia Franklin Pierce played a key role in the Kansas-Nebraska Act which created two new territories, Kansas and Nebraska He was the first President to present his address from memory. His speech was over 3,000 words long, and he used no notes or reference to present it
