Rutherford Hayes 19th President of the United States of America (1877-1881)

Rutherford Hayes was the first President to take the oath in the White House His nickname was 'Granny Hayes' this was because he did not drink, smoke or gamble In 1879, the tradition of the Easter egg roll on the grounds of The White House began. Conducted by Rutherford Hayes and his wife Lucy, the tradition is still in practice today and occurs on the Monday after Easter weekend In 1877, the first telephone was installed in the White House during the presidency of Rutherford Hayes. His first conversation was with telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell, who was 13 miles away. He was quoted as saying "He serves his party best who serves his country best."
