The business district of Kannapolis established what would become downtown as the first Cannon Mill facilities were being completed in 1907. By 1910, this area was becoming the center of the town’s activities. The intersection of Main Street and First Street became the Kannapolis Square, the hub of commercial activity. Of particular note was a business that advertised “Furniture, Coffins and Caskets.”
In 1937, Charles Cannon established a new vision for downtown, which would transform the appearance of the entire district. This vision was inspired by work his wife, Virginia Cannon, had observed in Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. By 1944, many of the sweeping changes were completed.
