Geocache Description:

A short jaunt down the road from the airport turnoff.  Depending when you come, you can get a terrific side view of aircraft landing/departing, and of the nearby harbour/shipping dock.  You might briefly see some of our smaller inhabitants, "Hikhik" or ground squirrel, at least until they see you!

You've probably heard the old, and somewhat disparaging, remark "Well, that dawg won't hunt", applied whether there be an actual dog, or an idea, or a plan of action.  Well, this cache is placed with that remark in mind.

GZ will bring you to the doorstep of a small colony of squirrels, but unlike their tree-born cousins, these don't fly.  Actually neither do their cousins, but that's another matter.  You'll find at the very least, the mound where they have burrowed into the tundra.  They are terrifically shy, and will dive for cover at your approach, so you should have no fear of them.  That said, don't try to capture them, or feed them.

The cache, which might be difficult to find in the snow months, is placed amongst some rocks (et, voila!  You see?  rocks... Rocky... squ....nevermind) in the vicinity of the burrow holes.  It should be a quick find, if you're in the right place.

Original cache contents include a toy for the kids, or the kids at heart, a dinosaur sippy-cup, a lantern, a pocket screwdriver set, and a few other mementos, as well as the logbook, pencil and sharpener.  The first finder will also find, and may take, an unactivated FTF trackable coin (about the size of a pathtag) from FTFGeocacher magazine.

The cache location was pinpointed using a smartphone app and also a handheld GPSr.  That said, may I add my usual caution:  When you come, please plan to come "old school", with a proper GPSr. Smart phones will now work in Kugluktuk to some extent (the coverage area is not large) BUT ONLY if they are connected to the Bell system. But a GPSr with the coordinates loaded will definitely get you to GZ.
