There is no doubt that the name Kannapolis is a direct reference to Cannon Mills or even James W. Cannon himself.  However, there is some debate as to how the name came about.  A widely accepted story says that the word “Kannapolis” came from the combination of the Greek words Kanna (meaning reeds) and polis (meaning city), which some believed meant “City of Looms”.  Historians dispute this theory by showing that James Cannon never studied Greek.  In 1906, a Concord newspaper used the name “Cannon City” in reference to the area of the new mill facility.  It is unclear whether it was mill workers or newspapers, but the name “Cannapolis” was used a short time later.  James asked Cabarrus County commissioners to officially name the town, but requested that it start with a “K”.  It is believed that this request was to help distinguish it from his mill village in Concord.  Kannapolis remained a “Town” until it was officially incorporated as a “City” in November 1984.
